Course Description

INTRODUCTION

The main aim of this seminar is to help you understand how to use a systematic approach to Task Risk Analysis (TRA) to increase safety. In addition, cost savings can be achieved by reducing production and quality losses.

A critical task is one that can result in serious injury, illness, damage to property and environmental damage (loss) if it is not performed properly. This seminar will provide you with a systematic view of human behaviour in a safety context. The purpose of a TRA is to track safety-critical tasks within a function. A well-implemented TRA forms the basis for safety procedures and instructions, work permits and public information. If applied properly, TRA serves as a means to reduce losses in many areas (accidents, damage, production and quality loss).

Objectives

  • Provide understanding of how to identify sources of risk and how to remove, reduce or mitigate those risks
  • Give practical experience in using key risk analysis tools and techniques
  • Provide understanding of all aspects of how to apply a TRA in practice
  • By means of a phased plan, you will be able to perform a TRA of divergent functions and draft a plan of approach for risk reduction
  • Explain how to use TRA as a way of improving safety, minimising losses and reducing production or quality control inefficiencies
  • Provide the information required for introducing, implementing and embedding TRA in your organization

Training Methodology

The programme will provide the theoretical background and techniques that underpin task risk analysis, planning and management. In order to accommodate individual participants’ different learning styles the programme uses a range of training methods. Your programme leader will encourage active participation to capitalise on your existing experience and expertise, including discussion of ‘real life’ situations in your organisations, plus the use of:

  • Brief lectures
  • Case studies
  • Self-analysis questionnaires
  • Group exercises and discussions
  • Video clips

Organisational Impact

By applying the learning from this programme, the following advantages can be obtained:

  • Work becomes simpler and safer
  • Less waste of time, space, energy and materials
  • Increased quality and productivity
  • Improved the use of manpower, machines and tools
  • Best use of employees’ knowledge and skills

Personal Impact

  • Increasing career flexibility (vertically and horizontally)
  • Accelerated thinking and problem resolution speed for managing business risk
  • Better understanding of the human factors that affect safety and cost
  • Better understanding of how to analyse risks and reduce losses
  • How to communicate and cascade the content of a Task Risk Analysis through your organisation
  • Greater motivation and ability to prioritize and direct individual specialist effort

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Anyone leading or managing a division, department or team
  • Experienced managers and leaders seeking to understand more about managing risk
  • Managers desiring to sharpen their risk analysis and management skills
  • Supervisors and team leaders transitioning into risk management roles
  • It will particularly benefit employees who, in addition to performing technical installation assessments, also want to be capable of performing a Task Risk Analysis and structurally reduce losses. This may be a technical department employee, but also a safety expert or occupational safety coordinator.
