Effective Team Leader – Is there a single recipe?

What is a team? There are many definitions, so let us take an example fromEffective Team Leader1 Wikipedia.

“A team is a group of individuals working together to achieve a goal. A group does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members”.

Now we have a starting point – a team needs a goal. It also needs complementary skills, coordinated effort and synergy. In support of this Wikipedia entry we find individual web sites and internet searches producing their own definitions, but everyone includes the wordGOAL as part of its criteria.  Therefore we can be certain that one of the fundamental requirements to be an effective team leader is to know and understand what their goal is and how it is to be aligned to achieve their corporate goal.

Effective Team Leader2Once the Team Leader knows, ‘What needs to be achieved?’, they move to the next question:

  • Who is going to do it?
  • When does it need to be done?
  • Where does it need to be done?
  • Why does it need to be done?

The Effective Team Leader also has to identify:

  • How will they measure the performance for each team member in carrying out their goal?
  • How can this goal be ‘transformed’ in a way that will improve results?

Thus the CAPABILITY of the Team Leader can be measured by the thoroughness of applying the above questions and answers. However, to be an Effective Team Leader you not only have to have the capability to do the job, you also have to be trusted, respected and an example to your team. Recent studies suggest that the CONDUCT of an Effective Team Leader is just as important, if not more so, than the traditional capability aspect of Team Leadership. Effective Team Leadership is about building relationships not control.

Therefore, an effective team leader needs a variety of traits and characteristics that encourage team members to follow them. Team leaders naturally possess certain qualities, such as compassion and integrity, or learn leadership skills through formal training and experience. The qualities of an effective team leader inspire the trust and respect of the team and stimulate production within the workplace. These traits and characteristics mainly centre on “leading by example’ but again we see many different definitions used to characterise the Effective Team Leader. Now we can see that for the Team Leader to be effective, they must have the capability to do the job, and the conduct to build relationships with their teams.

Effective Team Leader3For many employers and employees this is where things sometimes go wrong. As an employer we may identify an employee of excellent skill and knowledge for their job. Along comes promotion and the employers are surprised that the once excellent team member does not always become the excellent team leader that was expected. It can also work the other way. The positive attitude and professional relationships in the once excellent team member may not be enough for them to become an excellent team leader.

Evidence of this can be found in most organisations. It is also the reason so many books, articles and research papers have been written about becoming an effective team leader. There is not one single recipe, process, procedure or style. It is about developing the balance between capacity and conduct within the individual, providing self-direction, mastery and purpose to achieve their own potential and the desire to change that provide the hallmarks of an Effective Team Leader.
