I Would, If I Could – If Only…

I am a very lucky man. I am an international trainer and I am privileged to be given the opportunity to deliver a range of courses to a variety of professional people from many different backgrounds and industries.

I absolutely recognize that whilst you could easily research the web for a vast range of information and topics, and in fact, read the latest best practice methods and processes that would assist you in your career – I honestly believe that by attending a formal training course and using the skills, knowledge, tools and learning from attending a bespoke and designed course will make a huge difference in your chosen profession.

Having just made that statement, I also recognize that by just attending a course, will not necessarily allow you to grow in your career and you will probably question the reason and rationale of why you should attend any course. Also, what a difference it could possibly make to your day to day approach.

A phrase I hear all too often is: “I would, if I could”. This comes about by encouraging the participants to openly discuss how they will go back to their organizations and make a difference from attending this formal training course.

Whilst on one hand it is understandable and indeed, disappointing to hear this; on the other hand, it presents the opportunity to explore what this phrase actually means and its consequences if left unchallenged.

The true aim of any instructor is to deliver a focused message and encourage course participants to learn new concepts and then possess the competence, ability and have the confidence to make a difference on their return to work. More importantly though, our aim is to inspire you to do things differently.

But theory is so much different to actual practice. Yes, we should encourage you to make that real difference – to go back to your job and use all the knowledge to your advantage – and, very importantly, allow your organization to gain all the benefits in terms of the financial and time investment.

From my own personal experience of working in corporate organizations, I know it can be difficult and challenging to take forward new ideas and concepts that I had learned by attending training courses. There was always that feeling of trying to break down the ‘internal politics’ or getting past “this is the only way of doing things around here” scenario.

But – you must get past this “I would, if I could” situation. Look, the world is changing and your bosses are looking for people who display passion and commitment – people, just like you who are willing to use their new found knowledge that will make an impact and will make a difference.

You need to adapt the attitude that if you know you could, then you should. Have the confidence that you were chosen to attend your training course so that you can (and you must) go back to your job and make that difference

Belief comes from within you. Only you, therefore, can change your outcomes – so move from “if I could” to “I know I can, so I will”  – Peter Doyle
