INTRODUCTION

Since mid-Feb. 2020, the world and financial markets, equity as well as commodity, have been buffeted by the prevailing crisis.  On the markets’ side, these developments have manifested themselves in very sharp moves in asset prices. 

This GLOMACS Current State of the Equity and Commodity Markets online training course will explore these issues, predominantly on the oil side, with a reference to the equity and other commodity markets. 

The thrust of the course will be:

  • Which financial-markets indicators have moved, and what do they tell us about the world? In particular, what have been the developments/financial market indicators in the oil markets?
  • From the perspective of financial markets, how might we contrast the current crisis with past crises?
  • What are the indicators we might seek in terms of an eventual “return to normalcy”?

Objectives

In addressing the current situation, the course’s objectives are to provide specific quantitative answers to several questions:

  • Since financial markets are efficient aggregators of information, how are the equity, credit and commodity markets assessing the current situation?
  • What are the specific metrics we can examine that provide an insight into the financial markets’ “Message from Markets”?
  • Relative to past crises, how are markets quantitatively assessing the current crisis?
  • What are the metrics that provide an insight into the “return to normalcy”?

This online training course will utilize a variety of proven online learning techniques to ensure maximum understanding, comprehension, retention of the information presented.     • Can we empirically distinguish supply- and demand-side aspects of the current crisis?
    • What can we learn from professionals' oil-price forecasts?
    • How Meaningful is the WTI's One-Day Negative Price?
