GLOMACS Delegates Checks Out OPEC Headquarters in Vienna

On 26 July 2018, John Smart led a group of GLOMACS delegates on an educational trip to Vienna to visit OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), a permanent intergovernmental organization for oil exporting nations.

The delegates attending the ‘Managing Conflict and Difficult Situations: The Complete Guide in Handling People’s Behavior Effectively’ were given a VIP tour around the OPEC Headquarters in Vienna.

The delegates were given a friendly and warm welcome by Mr. Mahid Al-Saigh, OPEC Senior PR Assistant.  They were guided to a big hall to enjoy listening to a nice presentation about the organization. They talked about their activities, mission( )  and the organization’s 50 (58) year(s) of history.

Mr. Mahid Al-Saigh gave a very interesting, as well as deeply fascinating presentation in the main press conference room about the formation and history of OPEC.  This included the organization structure, purpose, mission and values; as well as how member(s) of the organizations joined, and the election of the Secretary General.  He explained in clear detail(s) the election process and that all member(s) of the organization were of equal status. In addition, he dispelled some of the myths and sometimes misperception of OPEC in the public eye.

The tour concluded in the Main Conference Hall, where all OPEC members, and their delegations meet to discuss OPEC members production matters.  The tour also took the delegates around the conference area where art work(s) from all the member(s) of the petroleum exporting countries were on display, demonstrating the rich and cultural diversity of OPEC member countries.

OPEC is the abbreviated form of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which coordinates and unifies the petroleum policies of its Member Countries to ensure the stabilization of the international Oil markets. OPEC’s mission is to secure efficient and regular supply of petroleum to consumers, a steady income to producers and a fair return on capital for those investing in the petroleum industry. In September of 1960, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela founded OPEC in Baghdad, Iraq. Later, Qatar, Indonesia, Libya, UAE, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Gabon and Angola joined the organization. Some of them have suspended their membership and currently the organization has 15 Member Countries.

The OPEC Secretariat, located in Vienna, is responsible for all the resolutions passed and carried out by the Board of Governors.

GLOMACS delegates watched a video presentation about OPEC’s history. At the end of the presentation delegates were given an extra time to ask questions. Some delegates asked about the future goals of OPEC towards energy and substitution of petroleum for Green Energy. The discussions got quite interesting answers which are mostly explained in detail on www.OPEC.org

The delegates and GLOMACS were extremely grateful to OPEC, and Mr. Mahid Al-Saigh, for making this tour possible. They indicated that this was an experience they would never forget.  For some delegates, with their countries being members, it was a great honour to see the place that their Government Ministers worked.

GLOMACS would like to express its sincere appreciation to OPEC and Mr. Mahid Al-Saigh for his time and excellent hospitality in making this tour extremely memorable for all.
