4 Principles to Improve FMECA Sessions and Quality

FMECAFailure Mode, Effect and Criticality Analysis is a convenient method to gather knowledge and experience about the behavior of your technical systems, apart from the information and specifications you already have in your documentation. FMECA sessions can be very motivating for your fellow workers because you share insights, learn new things, sometimes even after many years of experience. The flipside is that it can be a boring inventory of a great amount of well-known information. And the main cause of an ill motivated FMECA team is a dull facilitator who is not ready for the task.

A Skilled FMECA Facilitator can make the difference. Key is a simple set of principles.

  1. Be prepared. Be an expert on the method. Know how to use language (questions, summarize, challenge) to provoke essential information instead of stories and explanations. Know the format and all the concepts and definitions.
  1. Rely on the process and the format. Use a proven method so there is little room for discussion about the format. If you can explain it easily, the team will trust you and even act pro-active.
  1. Discriminate between your knowledge and role. The moment the facilitator makes decisions without the approval of the team, the team will be confused about his role. The team may feel ignored and overruled. The facilitator is chairman and therefore has the power to manage the process, not the decisions. Though in many cases the facilitator has also relevant knowledge. A skilled facilitator is able to handle both roles clearly.
  1. Delegate to participators and make them responsible. The team is the owner of the knowledge. Create working methods like presentations, in which experts can expose there insights and benefit from it. Also celebrate the results of the FMECA project.

In a complex world in which knowledge is fragmented experts have to cooperate in multidisciplinary teams. To enhance the effectiveness of these teams a skilled facilitator is key. “Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) Facilitator Skills Training will boost your awareness of the pitfalls and skills to be more successful in business and in your career. This training is scheduled between 10 – 14 December 2017 in Dubai.
