Are you able to lead in the 4th Industrial Revolution?

The 4th Industrial Revolution is upon us, classed as a time during which  Smart Technology will be at the fore; driving ongoing automation of manufacturing and industrial practices; the integration with finance and business commerce; advances in medicine, aviation… the list goes on.

This Revolution encompasses machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, utilizing as well as integrating with the ‘internet of things’ (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) software.  It allows for increased automation, self-monitoring, as well as the production of ‘smart machines’ able to analyse and diagnose issues – without the need for human intervention.  The effect of the 4th Industrial Revolution envelopes and integrates everything we do now, and into the future.

With the impact of COVID-19, this revolution has been rapidly accelerated with the almost overnight transition to utilise technology to let  us live in the ‘new normal’.  The growth has been exponential in AI systems, track and trace, apps in cafes to order food (without the need for face-to-face contact), online learning in education, e-commerce, remote working teams, ‘in-house’ 3D printing to (eliminate the middle man for certain components during lockdowns), medical diagnosis and monitoring… the list goes on.

However, with the rapid innovation, the world has also moved on with some organisations questioning whether they will go back to the ‘old norm’.  So, what is now needed to lead people and organisations during this hugely important industrial revolution – and beyond?  An appreciation of technology is undoubtedly a large part of this, but what about the ‘human factors’ required of leadership.

Leaders will need to fully embrace rapid change, ‘be comfortable being uncomfortable’, as the speed of advancement goes from a leisurely stroll to high-speed rollercoaster.  They will need to become more agile, not just in them self, but to create Agile teams and Agile organisations.  They will need, as leaders always do, the vision to see clearly and to influence others to follow this dream.

Imagination and creativity to develop innovative mindsets to open up to new ideas, and fully embrace human-to-technology integration will be key. The need to constructively question traditional views of Strategy and Business Operations, in order to develop ‘Disruptive’ Strategies to grow disruptive markets ahead of their competitors.  They will need the ability to empower others, to grow talent, to create highly talented teams, quick to react, respond and contribute value, in order to accelerate the delivery of cutting-edge solutions.

The important thing to remember is that all of this can be developed.
