Self-Belief in Leadership: Harnessing the Power Within

Self-Belief in LeadershipLeadership is one of the great enigmas – some seem to ‘have it’, whilst others don’t; some find it easy, whilst others don’t; some demonstrate it, whilst others don’t.  Unfortunately, there is no magic formula for leadership, as there are too many variables from behaviours, ability, traits, to ambition and drive to social and environment factors.  But there are things that we can learn and develop which can make us better and more effective leaders.

Studies through Beasley, Gardner and Payne identified Emotional Intelligence (EI) as one indicator, popularised by the book through Daniel Goleman.  Two factors of EI is that of Self-knowledge/awareness, as well as Self-management.  Self-management includes amongst other things discipline, as well as managing your emotional states.  In self-knowledge/awareness, we must identify our strengths and weaknesses, as any good leader knows ‘when to fight and when to run’, or in a work context for example – when to accept a task – or be honest to admit they may not be the best person and perhaps assign this to another member.

We also need to consider the power that self-belief also plays in defining our leadership strength.  This is sometimes called ‘personal power’ or ‘inner power’ and can be harnessed through our positive mental state or attitude.  Gandhi once quoted: “Man often becomes what they believe themselves to be.  If I believe I cannot do something it, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it, even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.  Be the change you want to see!”  In essence, if you belief you will fail – you will; if you believe you will win – you will; so focus on winning.  He and many others realised that having a positive mental belief can mean the difference between the winners and losers.

Leaders are winners.  Leadership is not just about acquiring the right skills and knowledge, but is more.  It’s about having the personal or inner power to overcome those times when they are at their darkest, when you feel like giving up, when those around doubt you, when you fear failure – but know in yourself that you will succeed.  If you copy other people you will only become the best copycat there is.  Leaders are genuine, they are the best that they can be; they know this and believe in this through their own positive mental attitude and belief in themselves.  Leaders realise that one person’s negative opinion should never influence their own belief and outcome.

Self-belief, self-knowledge, personal and inner power are just some of the key topics covered on the course: ‘Maximising Your Leadership Effectiveness’.  This highly interactive course will explore many areas of leadership to develop your positive mental attitude, your presence, your fortitude and tenacity, in order to maximise your development on your winning leadership journey.
