Supply Chain Security and C-TPAT Requirements

The security of supply chain has always been a concern for transport, logistics and manufacturing companies. Concerns about terrorism, theft, damage, and shipment integrity intensify as the value of cargo increases. Add to the mix, the threat of organized crime, piracy, and security of the supply chain becomes critical to business survival.

Through the monitoring and management of security risks and known vulnerabilities in your organization and supply chain, ISO 28000 certification will guide your organization to secure and provide security to its own internal process and allow management to focus its attention on areas which may be of a greater security concern.

ISO 28000 establishes a security monitoring system that will protect people, goods, infrastructure, equipment, and transportation against security incidents and other potentially devastating risk scenarios. It specifies the requirements to establish, implement, maintain, improve and audit a security management system using the PDCA methodology (Plan, Do Check Act).

Supply chain security management systems based on the ISO 28000 standard identify the security risk levels across your supply chain business operations. This information then enables your organization to carry out risk assessments as well as vulnerability assessments and apply the necessary controls with supporting management tools.

Used in parallel with ISO 28000 is The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), which is a voluntary supply-chain security program led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) which focuses more on improving the security of private companies’ supply chains with respect to terrorism and organized crime.

C-TPAT has a common five-step risk assessment process:

  • Mapping Cargo Flow within the supply chain
  • Threat Assessment
  • Vulnerability Assessment
  • Action and Corrective Action Plans
  • Documenting the Risk Assessment Process

Maintaining the security and integrity of the supply chain is imperative for a huge range of organizations. Certification and compliance to ISO 28000 acts as a corner-stone of managing the inherent risks present in the supply chain by providing a structured and defined approach to understanding, measuring, and managing these risks.

GLOMACS has designed a new training seminar on Implementing Supply Chain Security and C-TPAT Requirements to introduce you to the supply chain security, The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and how it benefits an organization’s position in the international trade arena.
