Introduction

This Petroleum Resources & Reserves Management training course provides a practical management framework for governing petroleum resources and reserves across the exploration-to-production lifecycle. Using the SPE Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS) as the principal framework, participants will develop the capability to interpret resource classification, project maturity, commerciality and uncertainty within the context of corporate planning and investment decision-making.

The training course moves beyond resource classification to address how petroleum opportunities are matured, governed and prioritised. Participants will examine corporate resource inventories, contingencies, project decision gates, annual reserves reviews, reconciliation and portfolio prioritisation. Particular attention is given to governance, accountability, data lineage, change control and technical assurance. The training course concludes by connecting resources and reserves information with executive reporting, portfolio decisions and capital allocation.

This GLOMACS Petroleum Resources & Reserves Management training course will highlight:

  • Applying PRMS within corporate petroleum resources and reserves management
  • Managing resource maturation, contingencies and project decision gates
  • Establishing reliable resource inventories, ownership and change control
  • Managing annual reserves reviews, bookings and reconciliation
  • Prioritising petroleum opportunities using maturity, value, risk and strategic criteria
  • Strengthening reserves governance, technical assurance and executive reporting

Objectives

By the end of this Petroleum Resources & Reserves Management training course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply PRMS principles within a structured corporate resources-management framework.
  • Evaluate project maturity, commerciality, uncertainty and barriers to resource progression.
  • Establish and maintain reliable petroleum resource inventories and maturation plans.
  • Manage reserves bookings, annual reviews, movements and reconciliation processes.
  • Prioritise petroleum opportunities using resource potential, economics, risk, timing and strategic fit.
  • Strengthen resources governance, technical assurance and management reporting.

Training Methodology

This training course emphasises management application, critical interpretation and decision-making rather than detailed subsurface calculations. Participants will work with resource portfolio cases, project-maturity assessments, decision-gate exercises, contingency registers, reserves reconciliations, prioritisation scenarios and governance reviews. A progressive company case will connect the concepts across the five days and demonstrate how technical and commercial information can be translated into defensible management decisions.

Organisational Impact

Organisations will benefit from:

  • More reliable and consistently governed corporate resource inventories.
  • Clearer priorities and accountability for resource maturation.
  • Better alignment between technical evaluation and investment decisions.
  • More disciplined reserves booking, reconciliation and change control.
  • Stronger technical assurance, documentation and audit readiness.
  • Improved portfolio prioritisation, capital allocation and executive reporting.

Personal Impact

Participants will develop:

  • Greater confidence in interpreting petroleum resource portfolios.
  • Stronger capability to identify maturation barriers and challenge project assumptions.
  • Improved understanding of reserves movements and reconciliation.
  • Greater ability to compare and prioritise petroleum investment opportunities.
  • Stronger capability to evaluate resource information, uncertainty and assurance requirements.
  • Greater confidence in presenting resource-management priorities and recommendations to management.

Frequently Asked Question

It is the coordinated process used to maintain, mature, govern and communicate petroleum opportunities throughout the exploration, development and production lifecycle. It connects technical resource information with project decisions, portfolio priorities and corporate governance.

Reserves evaluation primarily addresses how petroleum quantities are estimated and technically classified. Resources and reserves management addresses how those estimates are governed, matured, reconciled and used to support corporate decisions.

Resource maturation is the structured progression of a petroleum opportunity as technical, commercial and other contingencies are resolved and the associated project becomes increasingly capable of moving toward development.

Yes. PRMS provides the principal framework for understanding resource classes, project maturity and commerciality. The course concentrates on its management application rather than repeating detailed reserves-calculation techniques.

Contingent resources relate to discovered petroleum quantities associated with projects that may be recoverable but still have unresolved contingencies preventing them from satisfying the requirements for reserves.

A resource maturation plan identifies the activities, evidence, responsibilities, milestones and decisions required to progress an opportunity toward greater commercial maturity.

Reserves reconciliation explains how and why a company's reserves position has changed between reporting periods, distinguishing production, additions, technical changes, project maturation, economics and portfolio transactions.

Yes, but only where it relates directly to petroleum resource maturation and investment decisions. It is not intended to replace a comprehensive upstream portfolio-management or petroleum-economics programme.

No. Detailed volumetrics, material balance, decline curve analysis, reservoir simulation and probabilistic reserves modelling belong in the separate technical reserves-evaluation course. This programme uses technical results as inputs to management decisions.

Yes. It is particularly suitable for national oil companies and government petroleum organisations that manage multiple assets, development opportunities, corporate resource inventories and formal reserves-management processes.
