Introduction
Value Stream Mapping is the foundation tool of Lean transformation — and the most commonly misapplied. This masterclass takes delegates beyond the basic current-state map to develop expertise in future-state design, takt-based flow, pull system architecture, and value stream governance. The GLOMACS Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training course covers VSM for manufacturing, service, transactional, and digital processes, ensuring the skills transfer to any sector.
Objectives
By the end of this Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training course, participants will be able to:
- Create accurate current-state value stream maps using standard Lean symbols
- Calculate takt time, cycle time, lead time, and process flow metrics
- Identify the eight wastes through map analysis
- Design future-state value streams aligned with customer demand
- Build implementation plans and Kaizen burst priorities
- Apply VSM to service, transactional, and digital value streams
Training Methodology
Delegates map real or representative end-to-end processes throughout the week, working in small teams under coach guidance. The week culminates in a future-state design exercise and presentation. Templates, symbol libraries, and Excel-based calculators are provided for ongoing use.
Organisational Impact
- Clear visibility of how value flows (or stalls) across the organisation
- Prioritised improvement roadmap grounded in customer value
- Common visual language uniting operations, quality, and leadership
- Foundation for systematic Lean transformation
Personal Impact
- Expert capability in a foundational Lean skill
- Confidence to facilitate VSM workshops with senior stakeholders
- Practical toolkit transferable to any process-driven environment
- GLOMACS Value Stream Mapping Practitioner certification
Who should Attend?
This GLOMACS Value Stream Mapping (VSM) training course is suitable for a wide range of professionals, but will particularly benefit:
- Lean Practitioners, Six Sigma Belts, and Continuous Improvement Managers
- Operations and Production Managers
- Process Engineers and Industrial Engineers
- Service operations and shared services leaders
- Transformation and change managers
VSM Foundations and Mapping Conventions
- Origins of VSM and its role in Lean transformation
- Standard symbols, conventions, and mapping software options
- Defining the value stream boundary and customer
- Walking the process — data collection at the Gemba
Building the Current-State Map
- Drawing process boxes, data boxes, and material flow
- Mapping information flow and push/pull signals
- Calculating cycle time, value-added time, and lead time
- Workshop: current-state map of a manufacturing process
Analysing the Current State
- Identifying the eight wastes on the map
- Calculating process cycle efficiency
- Constraint identification and capacity analysis
- Workshop: current-state map of a transactional process
Designing the Future State
- Takt time and continuous flow design principles
- Pull systems, kanban, and supermarket logic
- Pacemaker process selection and levelling (heijunka)
- Identifying Kaizen bursts and improvement priorities
Implementation and Governance
- Implementation planning and sequencing
- VSM governance and value stream organisation design
- VSM for digital and software value streams
- Final team presentations and certification
- Upon successful completion of this training course, GLOMACS Certificate will be awarded to the delegates. Continuing Professional Education credits (CPE): In accordance with the standards of the National Registry of CPE Sponsors, one CPE credit is granted per 50 minutes of attendance
