Advanced Safety Leadership

A standard health and safety course typically focuses on rules, compliance, and hazard identification. This course focuses on the leadership and human behaviour side of safety, understanding why accidents really happen through models like the ABC Model and root cause analysis, how safety culture matures through stages such as the Bradley Curve, and how a leader's own style and communication actively shapes whether a workforce complies with safety rules out of fear or genuinely believes in them.

Yes. Day 3 is built specifically around leadership styles and communication — including transactional, transformational, felt, and values-based leadership, and Goleman's six leadership styles, framed throughout around safety outcomes rather than generic management theory. Even safety professionals without direct management responsibility need to influence behaviour on site, and this is the skill Day 3 is designed to build.

Day 1 covers this in depth: the analysis of accidents using current figures and costs, human factors, triggers and consequences, the New ABC Model (Antecedent-Behaviour-Consequence), and the distinction between immediate causes, underlying causes, and root causes. The course teaches you to look past the immediate cause of an incident to the systemic root cause that, left unaddressed, is likely to cause a similar incident again.

Yes. Day 2 covers major hazard and risk management tools including ISO 31000 risk management, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA), and bow-tie analysis for mapping the barriers that prevent a major incident and limit its consequences if it does occur. This is paired with inspection and auditing practice, including the different types of safety audit.

Day 2 also covers emergency response and event safety, including current requirements such as BS 5266-1 emergency lighting, alongside the safety management system audit standards in current use, such as ISO 45001.

Day 4 is dedicated to investigation methodology, including HSE investigation guidance and specialist witness statement practice, obligations under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, and the duty to monitor and review health and safety arrangements under Regulation 5 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. You will also learn how to judge the right depth of investigation for a given incident, and how to write a report that drives action rather than simply documenting what happened.

Yes. Day 5 covers organisational resilience and crisis management, including current standards such as BS 65000 (organizational resilience) and ISO 22361 (crisis management), business continuity under ISO 22301, and the three classic hallmarks used to judge whether a situation has crossed the threshold into a genuine crisis: threat, surprise, and short decision time.

Day 1 and Day 3 work together on this. The Bradley Curve gives you a model for where a team's safety culture currently sits, from Reactive through to Interdependent, and Day 3's leadership and motivation content — including the distinction between a workforce that follows safety rules because it ‘has to’ versus because it ‘wants to’ — gives you the practical tools to move a team from one stage to the next.
