Leadership behaviors and outcomes are attributable to multiple people across multiple points in time existing within their locales. It is not enough for top leaders to allow this emergence to occur; they also need to allow for shared accountability across the organization so that DL can successfully advance strategic change.


You will learn a great deal that you can take back to work. For example, Yukl and his associates (e.g., Falbe & Yukl, 1992; Yukl, Kim, & Falbe, 1996; Yukl & Tracey, 1992) have developed what is perhaps the most comprehensive taxonomy of influence tactics. Their typology gathers together nine influence tactics: The first four which are discussed in class are (1) rational persuasion (using logical arguments and factual evidence to persuade a target that a request will result in the attainment of task objectives); (2) consultation (seeking a target's participation in planning a strategy, activity, or change for which the target's assistance is desired); (3) inspirational appeal (arousing a target's enthusiasm by appealing to values, ideals, and aspirations); (4) ingratiation (seeking to get a target in a good mood or to think favorably of the sender before asking the target to do something).

Delegates will also learn about some influence models and  how to use them to influence others.

Case studies are presented, questions are asked, and the delegates will answer the questions. Delegates will also learn about the most important motivational theories and models and how they can  use them in their personal and work lives.

Delegates will discuss different examples of reacting, emotional labor and common defense mechanisms. The aforementioned will be discussed in class. Stress relieving techniques (e.g., mindfulness, relaxation, other) will be covered in detail which will help delegated control their emotions.
