Course Description

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 pandemic has lessened some known global risks while also introducing a new set of uncertainties. Distracted by the pandemic, concerns about sustainability and the green transition have fallen down the agenda. Instead, business leaders are more concerned about specific threats like a prolonged global recession. Uncertainties about the outbreak are compounded by fears of further coronavirus waves, leading to an economic downturn affecting supply chains, solvencies, and the cross-border movement of people and goods. When economic risks are mixed with other unfolding factors, the second set of effects begins to emerge. The much digitalized, automated, and integrated economy and unprecedented shifts in working patterns caused by lockdown restrictions create new uncertainties. Concern about the rise of cybercrime, for example, comes out as one of the top risks.

Whereas traditionally, the sign of a good manager was a strategic mind, in the COVID era, it is all about the here and now. Organisations need to adjust to a new reality. Managers face many challenges caused by the relentless pace of change, whether new business models or the latest technical innovation threatening to disrupt a traditional industry. Traditionally, these changes are threats. With the right analytical tools and the ability to think strategically and understand how to communicate and implement the necessary changes, organizations can seize opportunities in each situation. Many organisations cannot adapt their strategy quickly enough to respond to or anticipate the effects of strategic change.
